Icelandic Internet bank suspends UK accounts

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The Icelandic internet bank, Icesave, has suspended all 300,000 of its UK customer accounts, leaving account holders in the United Kingdom unable to withdraw or deposit any funds. A message on its website posted this morning states:

“We are not currently processing any deposits or any withdrawal requests through our Icesave internet accounts. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. We hope to provide you with more information shortly.”

The internet bank, owned by the Icelandic bank, Landsbanki (Landsbankinn), which was recently nationalised in an attempt to rescue it, has been hit by the global financial crisis. Reports from the United Kingdom suggest that the traders and city are preparing for the parent company to be declared insolvent, leaving customers to recover their monies through a financial compensation scheme being backed by the Icelandic Government. The plan will cover the first € 20,887 (Approx £16,300 / $28,720), the remainder of the customers funds being recovered through the UK’s own financial compensation system.

Following the decision to nationalise Landsbanki, the Icelandic Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, who introduced and signed the emergency legislation into law, stated:

“What we are doing here is saving a banking system – saving the domestic banking system – and making sure that it can function properly. And I think, also, through our declaration on domestic deposits in these banks and saving institutions, we have been able to avoid a run on the banks here, and therefore prevent it.”

In describing and explaining its actions in nationalising the bank, the Icelandic Financial Supervisory Authority issued this brief statement:

“Based on new legislation, the Icelandic Financial Supervisory Authority (IFSA) proceeds to take control of Landsbanki to ensure continued commercial bank operations in Iceland. Domestic deposits are fully guaranteed, as declared by the government. Landsbanki’s domestic branches, call centres, cash machines and internet operations will be open for business as usual.”

In response to the deepening world financial situation, the Dutch government has this afternoon increased its savers protection from €38,000 to €80,000 effective immediately, to help secure the financial status of its savers within Holland. Icesave also has a Dutch branch, icesave.nl – their website was unreachable at the time of this article.

Pay-by-Plastic pumps up gas prices/Notes

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The first thing to catch my eye when I approached what used to be a Texeco gas station, was a guy up in a man-lift beside the pump price sign. Seeing heavy equipment being used to change what I thought were the gas prices, I thought, “Gawds, these prices are getting out of hand!”

After stopping in later and talking with the owner, I was impressed by how elated he was on the subject of bank processing fees. This was news to me. So I reported it.

The man-lift I saw earlier is absent from the photograph I took. They had used the lift to change the pump price sign from Texaco to Shell.

Saturday, October 16, 2010

US Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples visited Orr Elementary school in Tyler, Texas on Wednesday to kick off National School Lunch week for the state. Commissioner Staples spoke to over 200 students during lunch about the importance of eating healthy. “During the old days, the Three R’s in school meant ‘Reading, ‘Writing and ‘Arithmetic’ […] but I want you students to remember the three E’s: Education, Exercise and Eating right,” he stated.

The Commissioner asked students a variety of questions about state trivia such as the names of the state bird, the state tree and the state fruit. Students who answered correctly were awarded prizes.

During a short press conference following, Commissioner Staples stated his concerns regarding the health of children in Texas: “Current indications are that over 30 percent of children in [the United States of] America are struggling with childhood obesity. Estimates indicate that this issue alone can cost this county one-billion dollars in healthcare costs per year in the future.” “I applaud the city of Tyler for taking the Fit City challenge,” the Commisioner further stated.

U.S. Senate approves revised bailout package after controversial additions

Saturday, October 4, 2008

The U.S. Senate passed a revised bailout bill designed to help the struggling U.S. financial economy, which has measures nearly identical to the bill rejected by the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday.

“Senate Democrats and Republicans believe it is essential that we work quickly on this important legislation to restore confidence to our financial system and strengthen the economy,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The new revisions include raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000, a move designed to please progressives. However, the $110 billion in tax breaks, earmarks and what has been called pork barrel spending is not offset by any increases in revenues and has added opposition to the bill from some Representatives in the House.

Earmarks added into the bailout bill included $192 million in tax rebates for the Virgin Islands rum industry, $148 million in tax cuts for the wool industry, $100 million tax cuts to the auto racing industry, and $48 million in Hollywood tax incentives.

Vice President of Taxpayers for Common Sense, Steve Ellis, offered his explanation for the pork and earmarks added in. “People who support some of these provisions will forget about the $700 billion and concerns they may have on that, and say, ‘If you give me a few million in tax breaks for my constituents, I’ll go along'”.

The tactic seems to have worked, however, managing to flip enough votes to pass the bill.

“The inclusion of parity, tax extenders and the FDIC increases has caused me to reconsider my position,” said Representative Jim Ramstad (R Minnesota), who voted against the previous bill on Monday. “All three additions have greatly improved the bill.”

But Representative Marcy Kaptur (D Ohio) was not changing her no vote. “I will not support this legislation because it’s the wrong medicine,” she said.

The Senate took H.R.1424, a bill originating in the House concerning “equity in the provision of mental health and substance-related disorder benefits under group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment,” and extended it with the bailout provisions.

H.R.1424 was introduced on March 9, 2007, by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (RI-1) and had the support of First Lady Rosalind Carter. It is noted on the Congressional Website that “On 10/1/2008, the Senate passed H.R.1424 as the vehicle for the economic rescue legislation. In the EAS version of the bill (Engrossed Amendment as Agreed to by the Senate), Division A (pp.1-110) is referred to as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008; Division B (pp. 110-255) is referred to as the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008; and Division C (pp. 255-441) is referred to as the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008.” It was not treated as an appropriations bill in the House.

There were two votes in the Senate. The first was to amend H.R.1424, which required 3/5 to be accepted, which it was. The second was a vote on the bill. Passage of the Bill required only a 1/2 majority. It was passed with 74 yeas and 25 nays. Senator Kennedy did not vote.

Are You Looking to Solve Your Missing Tooth Problem?

Its clear that everyone in this day and age is living longer, stronger and feeling better than ever before thanks to impeccable medical advancements. In 50 years, we have seen our life expectancies climb up 10 years, which is really awesome, given that you take advantage of it and live life to the fullest! With so much life in us, itd be really nice to smile about it with a full set of teeth.

Smiles are everything, your smile is what people look at first. You want to feel confident in your smile, not embarrassed people are staring at your teeth; thatd be bad for your confidence and self-esteem. If youre looking to have a nice smile all your life, take a look at dental implants.

In this guide, I want to help you learn about dental implants and how its the best solution for missing teeth you want to get your hands on. Dental implants is my specialty and know exactly how much they cost, as well as what factors into the price of dental implants in Monrovia. I want you to get the best deal on dental implants, and it starts right here!

Facts You Must Know About the Cost of Dental Implants in Monrovia

One of the key facts you must know about dental implants is that they consist of 3 parts the implant post, abutment and crown.

Each part is needed for you to have a complete dental implant. I say this because there are some places in the city of Monrovia that offer implants for an unbelievable price of $399. You may have seen this in a Sunday newspaper or going on the freeways that pass through Monrovia. While this price seems like a miracle, its too good to be true. These $399 implant practices only advertise their implant post price. They dont put in fine print that the rest of the procedure can tally your expenses up another $1500+ per implant.

The truth is, most dental implant practices charge anywhere from $1500 to $6700 for a single tooth implant. There are exceptions, which sometimes beat that price or are so expensive you would think the implants theyre selling are made of 24k gold. Of course, there are many factors that affect dental implant costs in Monrovia. Heres what you absolutely need to know.

Please be aware, I conducted research to gain dental implant prices of several hundred dental implant practices in the city of Monrovia and surrounding counties including Los Angeles and Orange County. Two things you should really consider when looking for dental implants is the quality and the pricing. I was very shocked by some of the quotes that I came across that arent in the range of normal dental implant prices. Some prices are so outrageous, up to $9000 for a single tooth implant, that Im wondering who could ever afford thatunless theyre a Beverly Hills resident or a Hollywood superstar. One practice offered complete, high-quality dental implants for an affordable price of only $1200.

Pricetag on Quality

I talked about above the 3 different parts of the dental implant that are required to have a complete dental implant.

For the implant post, you want one that is composed of titanium. Titanium is a biocompatible material that is capable of bonding to your bone and acting a strong, solid root for the rest of the implant. You want the best for your teeth, yes? Make sure that youre getting a titanium based implant post.

On the other end, the crown is only visible part of the implant that most people can refer to as their tooth. You can select from a variety of high-quality materials – including ceramic and porcelain at your dentists approval. Depending on what material, and what tooth you are restoring, a crown can cost from anywhere between $500 and $3000.

Front vs. Back Tooth Dental Implants

Naturally, because of the physical nature of your jaw, placing a front tooth implant will cost more than a back tooth implant. Thats because implants posts are trickier to place in the front, and has less space to work with than your molars, making the procedure a little tougher than normal.

Location of the Dentist

Theres a lot of dental implant guides that recommend travelling all the way out to India to get a dental implant. Heres the thing about that. It takes 4-6 months for the implant post after first being placed for it to heal properly. Youre also not guaranteed to get the best implant materials or have a nice dental experience. Combine this with a very expensive round-trip airfare makes travelling out of the states for dental implants unsuitable. You might be saving up to 100% of the implant costs in places like India, but not on the trip just to get there. Why do that when you can spend a little more to stay near home.

Another thing about location, theres a lot of people in Monrovia and surrounding cities. Therefore, some dentist can afford to lower the cost of their services thanks to the numerous thousands of patients they may gain. Take advantage of affordable dental implant prices in Monrovia, but make sure youre getting high quality, complete dental implants.

Procedures that May Increase Your Dental Bill

You may need to get a bone graft or sinus lifting in order for a dental implant to be placed, at your dentists discretion. That is because when you are missing a tooth, you are no longer supporting the jawbone where the missing tooth is, and thus leads to jawbone deterioration. This may sound bad, but it is very much treatable!

Bone grafting is a general procedure that takes blocks of bone from adjacent areas in your body to replace any missing or broken down pieces of your jawbone, and is affixed with mini titanium screws to help with the bonding process.

Sinus grafting is another common procedure that lifts the floor of your sinuses. This is needed if youre restoring any upper back teeth because your sinus sinks when no teeth are present in the molar region. By getting a sinus lift, youre repairing the upper jawbone as well as making sure your jawbone is tall enough for implants to be properly placed in.

Be careful! Wherever you go, that dentist needs to take x-rays of your mouth prior to talking to you about dental implants. You should never trust a dentist that wont or only partially takes x-rays. After all, you want to make sure the dentist has a clear image of your mouth, and doesnt mess it up and/or hurt you. My advice, is to make sure youre getting work done at a credible dental implant practice.

The Benefits of Getting Dental Implants in Monrovia

Ive talked a lot about the different factors that go into the pricing for dental implants in Monrovia, but do you know why dental implants are the #1 choice recommended by the ADA for replacing missing teeth?

Dental Implants Give You Back Your Smile

Yes! Dental implants are the only real solution that restore your teeth and give you a smile you can be proud of. Your crowns will match the exact shade of the rest of your natural teeth, itll look so much the same youll forget which ones are actually dental implants. Youll laugh at yourself in the mirror just thinking about it!

They Support Your Jawbone

No longer will you have to worry about your jawbone breaking down. Prior to getting a dental implant, you may have experienced sunken facial appearances, making you look more like a ghoul and less like your beautiful self. With dental implants, and a successful bone grafting, youll have a strong healthy jawbone and can subtract years of aging!

No More Dentures, No More Hassles

If youre a denture user, I understand the pain and embarrassment of having to use dentures. Dentures require daily removal just to clean them and reapply them. It can feel really blocky, and be a real pain for your gums. Theres also that occasional time where they may fall out during a luncheon or a night out with friends. Stop living a denture nightmare, dental implants feel natural, and wont ever let you down. It sure would feel awesome to go to sleep at night with teeth in your mouth, rather than them soaking in disinfectant overnight!

Dental Implants Are Very Much Affordable

At first dental implants may seem more costly than that cheap denture or bridge. However over time, with replacement and refitting fees, dentures and bridges can be much more expensive than getting situated with permanent dental implants. If youre worried about the cost of dental implants in Monrovia, there are options minutes away that may better suit your needs.

Final Thoughts

Dental implants in Monrovia are easy to come across. They are the number one solution for improving your smile, as well as the overall health of your mouth. Violence at Cronulla Beach as 5000 people gather

Monday, December 12, 2005

Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

Following an attack on two lifeguards earlier in the week, allegedly by men of Lebanese descent, a protest had been organised via text messages and a small number of usenet postings.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber says inflammatory text messages calling for revenge attacks fueled the violence. Mr Schreiber said the heavily-circulated messages ensured troublemakers went to the southern Sydney beach looking for a fight. Police had patrolled the area all weekend after text messages began circulating among the community calling for vigilante responses to unwelcome visitors on the beach.

“The sending out of that text message was foolish and irresponsible and ensured that people from all over Sydney came to Cronulla looking to cause trouble and this was further fueled by alcohol,” said Mr Schreiber.

Sydney’s popular talk-back radio station 2GB also promoted Sunday’s event. Breakfast announcer Alan Jones has been accused of “fanning the flames.” Callers who recommended vigilante action were not discouraged to take the law into their own hands. Mr Jones, notorious for inflammatory comments, repeated the text message for Cronulla residents to defend their territory several times.

As the crowd marched along the beach and foreshore area, waving Australian flags, the crowd chanted racist slogans, with many wearing clothes bearing racist sentiment.

Middle Eastern men were openly targeted and assaulted. A young Muslim woman wearing a veil was chased into a kiosk on Cronulla beach. Police tried to move her away from the chanting crowd but were unable to reach the security of the command post. While the woman and police officers hid in the kiosk, a crowd surrounded the kiosk and shouted “Kill the Lebs”, while others climbed on top of the kiosk.

As police horses and special operations officers formed a line and pushed the crowd away, they were bombarded with beer bottles. After half an hour, an ambulance arrived at the kiosk and people were loaded into it. The ambulance, transporting six injured youths, escorted by police and police horses, was also bombarded with beer bottles. One struck an ambulance officer on the head. His colleague suffered lacerations to the arm.

Lewis Hamilton wins 2007 Japanese Grand Prix

Sunday, September 30, 2007

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton starting from pole wins the FIA Formula-1 2007 Japanese Grand Prix at the Fuji Speedway, Oyama, Japan. It was the first race on this circuit since 1977, when James Hunt won the race for McLarenFord.

A rainy and foggy weekend at Fuji appeared to be very hard for all drivers as the race ran longer then expected and the drivers have to concentrate more due to severe weather conditions. The race started behind the safety car which stayed on a track for an unusually long time, about 40 minutes.

Both Ferrari drivers, who managed to get the second row on the starting grid in the Saturday qualifying session were out of the game on the first laps due to their tyre selection mistake – drivers were forced to change to extreme wet tyres after a few driving errors. When the pace car finally turned off the lights giving the drivers a clear road Hamilton quickly got away from his teammate, Fernando Alonso, who had more fuel on board and thus had a heavier car. Alonso would be eliminated after 41 laps in a driving accident.

Heikki Kovalainen driving for Renault finally leads to a first podium finish for the team in this season, the Finn managed to get second place. On the final laps of the race he masterly defended his position from Kimi Räikkönen, who returned to the battle for podium after the Ferrari start failure.

Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber both nearly finished on the podium, but a collision between their Toro Rosso and Red Bull sponsored vehicles took them out of the race.

Renault-engined cars did well in the race with David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella finishing in 4th and 5th places.

Robert Kubica got a drive through the pit-lane penalty after some dangerous driving and a collision with Hamilton, causing the Polish driver to be rolled back to 7th place. Felipe Massa took 6th place for Ferrari in his hard battle with Kubica in the sprint to the finish line.

Vitantonio Liuzzi rounded out the top eight for Toro Rosso.

Adrian Sutil did his best for Spyker, finishing ahead of both Hondas. It was confirmed that Spyker will change owners next season becoming the first Indian national Formula One team in history.

In the Drivers’ Championship Hamilton, with 107 points, has increased his lead over teammate Alonso to 12 points. Kimi narrowed the gap to the McLaren drivers, now only five points behind Alonso.

News services and web companies increase Farsi services in light of Iranian political situation

Friday, June 19, 2009

Several organizations have increased their Farsi services in the wake of the events surrounding the recent presidential election. Google has added Farsi-to-English translation as one of its translation options to its Google Translate service. Similarly, Facebook has launched a Farsi version of its web site. The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for its Farsi news channel, BBC Persian Television.

Google’s translation services currently only provide translation from Farsi to English. Franz-Josef Och stated that this was to enable people in Iran to communicate directly via the Internet with the outside world, saying “Like YouTube and other services, Google Translate is one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa — increasing everyone’s access to information.”. The company states that it is working to provide translation between Farsi and the other 40 languages that it provides on its Translate service.

Facebook’s Farsi version of its web site, which is still marked as a beta-test version, was launched rapidly, with, the company states, the assistance of more than 400 Farsi speakers who submitted translations of the contents of the site.

Both companies state that their reasons for expanding their services are to promote communication, and are not politically motivated.

The BBC has increased the number of broadcasting satellites that it uses for broadcasting its Farsi news channel. This is, it states, in response to signal jamming of its broadcasts by the Iranian government. (The Iranian government accuses BBC Persian Television, which is funded by the British Foreign Office, of being a propaganda service for the British Government.) It states that its broadcasts on the Hot Bird 6 satellite had been aggressively jammed, and that therefore it was now also broadcasting from the Eutelsat W2M satellite, and planned to start broadcasting from Nilesat as well in the near future.
