Mark Webber wins 2012 British Grand Prix

Monday, July 9, 2012

Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber won the 2012 British Grand Prix yesterday at Silverstone, having started second on the grid behind Alonso’s Ferrari.

The second qualifying session of three was red-flagged due to heavy rain; but, despite this, Webber secured second on the grid behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, only bettered by under five hundredths of a second. Michael Schumacher, driving for Mercedes, started third with Webber’s team mate Sebastian Vettel filling out the second row of the grid in fourth.

The race itself started in dry weather, Alonso—running on hard tyres—took an early lead, with Webber—having opted for soft tyres—in pursuit. At the first pit stop, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton stayed out and took the lead, briefly duelling with Alonso before being passed. Shortly after the pitstop, Williams’ Pastor Maldonaldo and Sauber’s Sergio Perez had a collision, resulting in the Perez being knocked out of the race and Maldonaldo being fined €10,000 (£7,931, $US12,273).

Also receiving a fine was Perez’ team mate, Kamui Kobayashi. for a dangerous entry into his pit box that injured three of his team’s mechanics. According to Kobayashi, “The front wheels locked, I couldn’t control the car, and this is how I overshot the pit box.”

Alonso managed to hold off Webber until the final set of pit stops, but his rules-mandated switch to soft tyres left him unable to compete with the better grip of Webber’s Red Bull car. Webber caught him, overtaking Alonso with comparative ease on the 48th lap and going on to cross the line some three seconds ahead of the Spaniard.

With this victory, Webber is the second driver to win two races this season. After the race, he described himself as “…absolutely over the moon, absolutely rapt…”.

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

Friday, December 12, 2008

A US$14 billion bailout package deal for the “Big Three” United States automakers — Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors — has been rejected in the United States Senate after failing a procedural vote.

The bill was rejected after bipartisan discussions on the bailout broke down when Republican Party leaders insisted that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agree to increase wage cuts by next year in order to bring their pay into line with those of Japanese automobile companies in the United States. The UAW refused to meet the demands.

The final vote count in the Senate was 52-35, eight short of the 60 needed to pass. Only ten Republicans joined forty Democrats and two independents in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted with thirty-one Republicans against it.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that he was “terribly disappointed” by the failure of the bill to pass. “I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It’s not going to be a pleasant sight,” Reid said. “Millions of Americans, not only the auto workers but people who sell cars, car dealerships, people who work on cars are going to be directly impacted and affected.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker was also unhappy about the rejection. “We were about three words away from a deal. We solved everything substantively and about three words keep us from reaching a conclusion,” he said.

Some Democrats now want U.S. President Bush to reserve a portion of the $700 billion bailout package earmarked for Wall Street to assist the flagging car industry.

Stock markets worldwide fell dramatically on the news, with Japan’s Nikkei average losing 484.68 points, or 5.6 percent, reaching a level of 8253.87 points. Shares in the auto companies Toyota, Nissan and Honda all dropped by no less than 10 percent apiece. European stocks, such as those in the United Kingdom and Germany, also lost ground, with the FTSE-100 index of leading shares falling 176.3 points to a level of 4,211 at midday.

How You Can Use Organic Herbs}

How You Can Use Organic Herbs

by

John Wishley

If you are a successful organic herb grower, you might be wondering what to do with your bumper crop. Perhaps, you can’t use or give away all the herbs you have grown, and the last thing you want is to see your organic herbs go waste. There are five wonderful options of what you can do with your excess organic herbs.

Drying

Organic herbs dry well and easily, even in a relatively humid environment. Harvest the herbs early in the day, when it is cool. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut fairly long stems. Wash the herbs carefully and lay on a clean towel to absorb excess moisture. Then bundle them together with pretty ribbon, and hang them somewhere out of the way where it is relatively dry (not in a laundry room or bathroom, for instance). Avoid hanging them in direct sun, otherwise they will lose some of their color. After your organic herbs become completely dry – crinkly dry – put them in jars. They will last for about a year.

Freezing

Freezing herbs is another wonderful option they will be just like fresh when you use them. Harvest the herbs as above and wash thoroughly. Lay them on towels to dry, turning occasionally to make sure there is no excess water on the herbs. Don’t remove the leaves or flowers from the stem; herbs are best frozen on the stem. Place them in freezer bags and label. They can be kept in this way for six months or so. To use frozen herbs, remove the package and crumble off a few leaves, then put the package back in the freezer.

Making Herb Vinegar

Organic herb vinegars taste great on salads and cooked vegetables. They make great gifts, too. Experiment with different organic herbs to find the flavor combinations you like best. To make organic herb vinegar you will need:

Clean glass jar with lid.

Organic herbs including the flowers for an extra pretty color.

Vinegar: white vinegar works well, but you may have to look around to find organic white vinegar. Wine vinegars are also a good choice. Cider vinegar is the old stand-by, if you are ok with its strong flavor. Fresh organic herbs are best for herb vinegars. Harvest and wash as above, then fill the jar with them. Add vinegar and cover; set aside for several weeks, then strain the herbs out.

Making Organic Herb Oils

Similarly to herbal vinegars, herbal oils can also be used on salads. They are also great for dipping bread into and cooking with. You can use your organic herbal oils even as bath oils and skin moisturizers!

Important: Herb oils must be refrigerated. Storage time is less when fresh herbs are used. Flavored oils are an ideal environment for the growth of certain bacteria, so it is absolutely necessary to follow storage directions carefully. Oils made with fresh organic herbs should be used within two weeks. Oils made with fully dried organic herbs can be stored for up to a month in the refrigerator.

To make organic herb oil you will need:

A glass jar with lid

Organic herbs dried or fresh

Oil extra virgin olive oil is best, but actually you can use almost any oil.

Fill a glass bottle about half full of oil. Add the herbs, fill up with oil and cap.

Your organic herbs and products you made with them can be a wonderful gift to somebody. You can tie a pretty ribbon around a bottle of bay oil or chive vinegar, package it with a loaf of bread or a salad set and a unique gift is ready. You will really stand out and get a lot of appreciation.

Mayor of Camden, London, arrested in benefit fraud inquiry

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The mayor of the London Borough of Camden, England, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of benefit fraud. Omar Faruque Ansari was taken from Camden Town Hall by police to Holborn police station over allegations that he was wrongfully claiming disability benefits. After four hours of questioning, he was released on bail to return in March.

Today, Ansar said that he was sure that he would be cleared of any wrongdoing. “It is a very political thing. When you are mayor of Camden, you are a very trusting figure. Someone is trying to smear me”, he added. He is reported to receive £474 (about US$765) per month in disability benefits, after complications following a neck operation in 1995 – this was needed for injuries he received fighting for Bangladesh against Pakistan in the 1970s, he explained. “I’ve never even had a parking ticket in my life, so this is very distressing”, he commented.

The allegations appear to be unrelated to the mayor’s council work, a spokesman for Camden said. He refused to comment further on “allegations relating to the personal lives of [the council’s] members”.

Ansari, 55, moved to the UK in 1960 and has been mayor of Camden since May 2009, after joining the Liberal Democrats in 2006. He has been suspended as mayor and from the Liberal Democrat group while the investigation is ongoing.

CanadaVOTES: NDP incumbent David Christopherson running in Hamilton Centre

Friday, September 26, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party incumbent David Christopherson is standing for re-election in the riding of Hamilton Centre.

From 1985-1990, he served as a Hamilton City Councillor for Ward Four. He was elected to Ontario legislature in 1990, defeating a Liberal cabinet minister. Under Bob Rae, Christopherson served as Minister of Correctional Services and Solicitor-General. He did not seek re-election to legislature in 2003, opting to run for mayor of Hamilton. Considered a frontrunner, he lost to Larry Di Ianni.

He returned to politics just months later, changing his focus to federal politics. Christopherson beat Liberal cabinet minister Stan Keyes, the incumbent, serving as NDP critic for cities, community infrastructure, labour and steel policy. He has served as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Steel Caucus.

Wikinews contacted David Christopherson, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

First elected in 2004, David Christopherson is the only MP to have represented Hamilton Centre, which was created in 2003 from parts of three other ridings. Only 38 km², small versus other area ridings, its located on the south side of Hamilton Harbour. Alphabetically, Christopherson’s challengers are Anthony Giles (Libertarian), John Livingstone (Green), Lisa Nussey (Marxist-Leninist), Leon O’Connor (Conservative), Ryan Sparrow (Communist), and Helen M. Wilson (Liberal).

Ayurvedic Rejuvenation and Beauty Treatment

by

Abhimanyu Sharman

Sirodhara-

The person lies on a wooden bed in a comfortable position and is covered with a liberal application of the medicated oil (herbal concoction of milk or other materials) on the head and body. A specially designed apparatus is filled with the medicated oil and placed at a specific height. The masseur then swings the apparatus back and forth so that the oil flows continuously and gently across the forehead. The head is then dried with a towel and again oil is applied to the head. This treatment can also be done for a specific part or the whole body, depending on the ailment. It promotes rejuvenation and revitalization of the human mind and body, diminishing the effect of ageing.

Facial Massage

Kaircin is used for the face. This oil nourishes, cleanses and beautifies the tissues bringing a smooth youthful glow to the complexion thus reducing wrinkles.

Face Pack

After the facial massage Kairalis face pack is applied and can be left on until the full body massage is complete. This makes the skin soft and glowing.

Abhyangam-

The person undergoing massage is seated on the Droni (a wooden plank specially made for the massage). Two masseurs stand on either side of the person, applying herbal oil on the head and massaging gently. The massage is continued on the neck, ears, shoulders, chest and back. The person then turns on their back and the massage is continued from shoulder to toe. During the course of the massage the person lies on his right side, left side, stomach, and again on his back, and finally in the sitting position. General Massage (Abhyangam) has been found very effective for improving eyesight, longevity, sound sleep, rheumatism, vitality and creates glowing skin.

This treatment is followed by a Steam Bath and a warm shower.

Special Royal Makeover Treatment-

This is most Special Therapy provided by Kairali ayurveda group to make you feel thoroughly Royal. The guest is welcomed in a traditional Kerala style into the room with a simple prayer.

Padaprakshalanam (Traditional Foot Massage) is given concentrating on the vital points on the feet to activate its channels. This gives a very soothing effect to the whole body and even relaxes your eyes. This is then followed by Shiro-abhyangam (traditional head massage with herbal oils) where special Kairoil is applied to the head, which gets absorbed deeply into the scalp through the roots of the hair. It nourishes, lubricates and strengthens the hair roots and the skin of the scalp preventing hair loss and premature graying. This also improves circulation to the head relaxing the muscles, nerve fibers and increases the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for the relaxation of the body. As the feet and head are completely relaxed its time the body gets relaxed. This is accomplished by our Abhyangam (Full Body Massage), the famous synchronized massage where special Kairkare is given, which opens up all the lymphatic channels and allows the flow of the blood to all the vital regions. The body is then given a thorough scrub called Twak Shodhanam to remove the dead cells from the skin and covered with a cooling pack called Kaya Lepam. The scrub consists of special herbal powders mixed with grated coconut exfoliating the dead skin and moisturizing the new layer. Mukha-abhyangam (Face Massage) and Nethradhara are done as the body pack is left for drying. All of this is followed by Steam bath and warm shower.

Parts of New Orleans flood again

Friday, September 23, 2005

Rain and the storm surge from Hurricane Rita have overwhelmed one of the fragile levees in New Orleans. The Industrial Canal levee gave way, reflooding parts of the Ninth Ward. There are three significant breaches.

“Our worst fears came true,” said Maj. Barry Guidry of the Georgia National Guard.

“We have three significant breaches in the levee and the water is rising rapidly,” he said. “At daybreak I found substantial breaks and they’ve grown larger.”

The U.S. Corps of Engineers estimated that 6 inches of rainfall could breach the previously damaged levees. The Ninth Ward, which saw flooding as high as 20 feet during Hurricane Katrina, is currently in waist-high water as the nearby levee was overtopped. Water is spilling over the levee in a section 100 feet wide.

The Gentilly neighborhood has water accumulations of 6 to 8 inches deep as the patched London Avenue Canal has sprung leaks near its base.
